WHY DO I TEACH HEEL HOOKS TO WHITE BELTS. VIDEO

I was asked in the past if some of the moves I teach are "legal" during my classes. My usual response is that I teach Jiu-Jitsu. The word legal doesn't click in my head because I am always thinking about surviving, war, self-defense, the spirit of Samurai, and what really Jiu-Jitsu is about. I am a strong believer in teaching every aspect of the art from take-downs to every possibility of submission. If someone ever encounters a real-life situation I want them to have the confidence that they will survive and win the fight. How can this be accomplished? Well, we must train the way we fight and we must train hard so that when the situation arrives our bodies and minds are ready. I just saw a video this week that clearly reflects this type of situation, see LINK video at the end of this blog so that you can understand what I am talking about, a young man engages in a fight in a basketball court where he catches his adversary on a heel hook and tells him " I ll break your leg" guess what? the fight was over then. Not sure about how advanced he was in Jiu-Jitsu but clearly he has great technique. This a clear example of why is so important to learn everything that is available to you. When I teach my classes I am always thinking of worst-case scenarios and  I make it a point to show the students what is available for them. Sports Jiu Jitsu is great but more important is self-defense and learning everything about our beautiful art. I am a strong believer that if you start showing students knee bars of heel hooks at the most advanced levels by then is too late. Obviously, I am always adopting rules to whom you can apply these techniques and when because safety is my number one priority but surviving and winning is why we train. We drill and conduct many repetitions so that our brains eventually just react and execute therefore we need to start early in our training executing every technique that is available to us. I have a class specifically that I called "Submission Grappling on Mondays and the reason why I decided to call it that was because during this class my objective is to show stuff that other schools consider "illegal". "YOU CAN ONLY TRAIN THE WAY YOU FIGHT" MIYAMOTO MUSASHI Feel free to comment and share.
